In a move that perfectly captures the spirit of competition and sportsmanship, the defending UIL Boys Wrestling State Champions from two different classifications have announced they will face off in a highly anticipated dual meet.
The Class 6A powerhouse Allen Eagles will square off against the surging Class 5A champions, the Melissa Cardinals, in a matchup that promises to be a showcase of everything right with Texas wrestling.
For nearly two decades, the Allen Eagles have been the undisputed measuring stick for wrestling in the Lone Star State. Under the legendary leadership of Head Coach Jerry Best, the Eagles have built a dynastic resume that few programs in any sport can rival. Having captured 16 UIL Boys State Team Championships, Coach Best has transformed Allen into a national brand, consistently producing collegiate-level talent and All-Americans.
Just up I-75, the Melissa Cardinals have been authoring a compelling story of their own. Under Head Coach Oliver Pierce, the Cardinals just completed a historic 2026 campaign, capturing the program’s first-ever Class 5A Boys Team State Championship in dominant fashion. Melissa crowned two freshmen state champions, put three others in the finals, and established themselves as the new heavyweights of the 5A division. For his efforts in turning Melissa into a top-tier contender, Pierce was recently named the 2026 Coach of the Year by the Texas High School Coaches Association.
What elevates this dual from a great athletic contest to a deeply compelling story is the connection between the two head coaches. Before he was leading the Cardinals to state gold, Oliver Pierce wore the Allen Eagles singlet.
Pierce is a product of Jerry Best's legendary system. As a wrestler at Allen, Pierce was a two-time State Champion and was ranked #1 in the nation during his senior year. After competing at the Division I level for Arizona State, Pierce eventually returned to his roots, serving as an assistant coach under Coach Best for two of Allen's state championship teams before taking the reins at Melissa.
Now, the former assistant brings his own championship squad to the mat to face his former coach. It’s a testament to Coach Best’s legacy, not just the trophies in the Allen trophy case, but the culture he has ingrained that continues to elevate the sport across Texas.
